COMMUNITY PROFILE 🤝
Today, we learn more about Clio. They have recently opened a state-of-the-art office in Toronto, creating new opportunities for professionals to contribute to their growth. Renowned for their cutting-edge technology designed for law firms and legal professionals, they are expanding beyond Vancouver and actively building a talented team to support their continued success, right here in Toronto.
We spoke to Marina Harris, Clio's Chief People Officer, about what you can expect from joining the team, and why Clio is offering something different.
Clio has transformed the legaltech space—tell us about the founding story and the problem you were looking to solve.
Back in 2008, Jack Newton and Rian Gauvreau saw an industry running on fax machines and filing cabinets, and they knew there had to be a better way. Clio was born to elevate law firms into the 21st century with cloud-based tech, helping law firms work easier, faster, and more centered to the needs of their clients.
How has Clio evolved since its early days, and what are the key milestones that have shaped where the company is today?
Clio has grown from a scrappy startup to a legaltech industry leader—now with over 1,300 employees, unicorn status, and a record-breaking US$900M Series F last year. Today, 150,000 legal professionals use our platform, we have 300 app integration partners, a thriving channel partner network, and the endorsement of more than 100 bar associations and law societies worldwide.
Yet, even at this scale, our core principles remain unchanged. We cultivate a human and high-performing culture, value timely and candid feedback, and rely on our company values to guide high-quality decision-making at scale. We focus on impact over busy work, ensuring clear, organization-wide alignment on goals.
Clio has been recognized as a top employer—what specific initiatives or programs are you proud of?
At Clio, we know that top talent seeks growth, impact, and a strong culture—and we’re incredibly proud of the recognition we’ve received that reflects these values. From being named a Best Managed Company and a Forbes Cloud 100 company to earning spots on Fortune’s Fast 50 and CIX’s 2025 Innovator of the Year, these accolades affirm our commitment to building a company that truly invests in its people.
We continuously evaluate our total rewards program to ensure we remain competitive while fostering an environment that supports growth and learning at every career stage. This begins with an exceptional onboarding experience and extends through leadership development programs like Basecamp, which has had a profound impact on both emerging and seasoned leaders.
One of our most significant company-wide investments is Team Day—our annual all-company gathering that brings Clions together in person to kick off the year. A highlight of this event is our Impact Awards, where we celebrate culture carriers who exemplify our values. There’s nothing quite like receiving recognition in front of over 1,300 colleagues!
Beyond Team Day, we’ve also been intentional about creating meaningful connection opportunities. From in-office anchor day programs to team on-site throughout the year, we’re committed to fostering a workplace where Clions can collaborate, grow, and thrive.
What led Clio to open a new office in Toronto, and what role does this office play in Clio’s future growth?
Toronto is a hub for both legal and tech innovation, making it a natural fit for Clio. With over a decade in the city, our Toronto office has grown into the largest concentration of Clions globally. Expanding our presence here was a strategic decision—one that fosters collaboration, attracts top talent, and accelerates our market growth. As we continue to scale, we have ambitious plans to further expand our Toronto team, strengthening our capabilities and deepening our impact in the region.
What kind of person thrives at Clio, and what advice would you give to someone considering a role at Clio?
Our mission—to transform the legal experience for all—is ambitious, and the people who thrive at Clio are those who deeply connect with that vision. Success here comes with a high level of accountability, and those who embrace it find immense growth and impact in their work. My best advice for anyone considering a role at Clio: cultivate a growth mindset. If you're ready to take bold risks, tackle challenges head-on, and view every obstacle as an opportunity to learn, you’ll feel right at home.
