The power of storytelling

Today, we learn more about Peekapak, and how they are shaping the next generation, and the future (our children)

What is Peekapak trying to achieve?

At Peekapak, the mission is to help children grow into successful, compassionate, caring, and empathetic global citizens.

They achieve this by teaching crucial social-emotional learning (SEL) skills, ensuring that values like gratitude, perseverance, and respect become integral to their character. The goal is to create a company and curriculum that make SEL enjoyable, accessible, and effortless for teachers, parents, and children, so kids can learn naturally and effortlessly.

What inspired the idea?

Ami Shah, co-founded the company with her childhood best friend, Angie Chan. At the time, Angie was living in Hong Kong and working on her first children’s book. This experience sparked the idea that we could enhance childhood learning through storytelling.

They then began with a Kickstarter campaign, and after gaining some early momentum, they were accepted into Imagine K12, Y Combinator’s EdTech vertical. This opportunity led them to pivot towards education technology to expand our impact.

How is it different from other EdTech?

Peekapak integrates literacy, read-aloud sessions, group discussions, and visual recognition of emotional states. These activities and accompanying stories are designed using evidence-based practices and have been tested in various districts, schools, and after-school programs. Additionally, the activities help educators and families develop strategies to support children's social-emotional skills and deepen their own understanding of these concepts.

Peekapak also offers a personalized, game-based learning environment where students can learn independently, either in class or at home. Students create avatars that represent themselves and interact with Peekapak's characters through literacy-based games and activities. Emotional check-ins provide data to educators, allowing them to better support their students.

How can people gain access?

Teachers can begin using our program by visiting peekapak.com and signing up for a free account, which grants access to all of Peekapak’s stories on topics like self-regulation and empathy. For those looking to implement the full curriculum in their classroom, school, or district, we offer various subscription tiers. Teacher Pro provides access to our curriculum, stories, and parent updates, while Classroom Pro includes everything in Teacher Pro along with student access to myPeekaville, Peekapak’s interactive digital learning activities and stories.

On August 12, Co-Founder and CEO of Peekapak, Ami Shah, will take the stage to share more about her journey, evolution as a founder, and what it takes to build a product that is making a difference in the EdTech space.
